NPCC Annual Parade 21 April 2007

This year's NPCC Annual Parade will be held on Saturday 5.30pm, 21 Apr 2007 at Unity Square, Home Team Academy.

The NPCC Annual Parade (previously known as NPCC Day Parade) is held annually. This year's Parade will be held to commemorate NPCC 48th year. The Gold Award Winners for the Unit Overall Proficiency Award 2006 together with all the other NPCC units will field the marching contingents for the NPCC Annual Parade 2007.

Telok Paku Fame

Telok Paku Fame was a group of students from schools all over Singapore, who were members of the National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) during their school days from 1972 to 1974. It was during those years that they first met in a series of Cadet Inspector (CI) Adventure Training held at the campsite next to Telok Paku Primary School. It was at this place, where their friendships were first bond and kept.

Members of Telok Paku Fame were mainly from the NPCC CI 1st and 2nd Batch and NPCC cadets from Siglap Secondary School. Today, most of them are hitting their age of 50's.

34th Ship for Southeast Asia Youth Programme 2007

The Ship for Southeast Asia Youth Programme (SSEAYP) is an annual programme sponsored by the Japanese Government and supported by ASEAN countries. The SSEAYP aims to promote friendship and understanding among youths from the ASEAN countries and Japan. Singapore will be sending a contingent of 28 youths to participate in this year's programme, which will be held from 22 Oct to 12 Dec 2007.

Pre-requisites
Nominees should possess a track record of active youth, community or public service and be outstanding youths capable of assuming an ambassadorial role for Singapore. They should be between 18 and 30 years old as of 1 Apr 2007. Each selected participant is required to contribute a sum of at least $900.00 to the contingent fund. The fund will be used to cover individual and group expenses for the programme. Participants are encouraged to raise funds or approach their nominiating organisations to subsidise their contributions to the Contingent Fund. Each participant must recommend three Singapore families who can host foreign youth for a homestay programme in Singapore. Each foster family must be able to host and accomodate two overseas participants.
All participants are required to undergo a two-month orientation programme, which includes weekend and two weekdays evening training sessions per week. The orientation programme is tentatively scheduled from mid Jul to mid Sep 2007.

In 1987, the first NPCC Camp (a 0.88 ha site) at Kampung Bahru, Pulau Ubin was declared open. In 1994, the NPCC obtained a lease for the current 26 ha site. Construction on the new site began in 2001 and it was opened in 2004. 30 times bigger than the original site it can accommodate about 750 persons and has among others, its own jetty.

Douglas Foo

Douglas Foo Peow Yong, an ex-police cadet of Dunman High School NPCC unit and a NS Army officer. He is a multi-award wining entrepreneur, and well known as the founder of Sakae Sushi, a restaurant-chain based in Singapore.

Douglas Foo, being the CEO of Apex-Pal International, graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration (Finance) from the SIM-RMIT Programme in 1995. For his exceptional entrepreneurial achievements and notable service to the community, Douglas was conferred the Singapore Youth Award (Singapore's highest honour for youths under the age of 35 for Entrepreneurship category Awarded by the National Youth Council) for 2003 and the ASEAN Youth Award (Youth & Entrepreneurship) for 2004.

Douglas has also received several other prestigious awards namely the Entrepreneur of the Year 2002, the Merit Award for the Yazhou Zhoukan Chinese Entrepreneur Award 2002 and he was named the Top Outstanding Young Person in 2002.

Douglas started off as a marketing executive before his entrepreneurial spirit saw him set up a garment trading firm in 1996. A year later, he diversified into food and beverage with Sakae Sushi and has since developed Apex Pal International into the successful enterprise that it is today. The food and beverage group comprising renowned chains such as Sakae Sushi, Crepes & Cream, Black Tea Box Hibiki, Uma Uman Men and Nouvelle Events (its catering arm). The home-grown Sakae Sushi chain, which has expanded into Thailand, Indonesia, China, Philippines and Malaysia, was awarded one of the Singapore's Top Restaurant in 2001, the Singapore Franchise Mark in 2001 and Singapore Promising Brands Award 2003.

Douglas’s pioneering innovations include the patented portable conveyor-belt sushi system for both indoor and outdoor catering, the Interactive Menu System, and vitamin E enriched sushi rice. The use of portable conveyor-belt won Apex-Pal two awards in 2003 namely the Singapore Innovation Award 2003 (Innovation of the Year) for the Innovative Application of the Portable Conveyor Belt and Singapore Innovation Class.

Within a short span of 6 years, Apex-Pal was listed in the Singapore Stock Exchange in August 2003 and achieved a turnover of $59.1 million in 2005. Apex-Pal was ranked 29th in the Enterprise 50 Awards in 2001 and 28th in the Singapore’s 50 Fastest Growing Companies Award in 2005.

Apex-Pal adopted the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS) and Mainly I Love Kids (MILK) as its official charity. It raised $6,000 for MINDS in 2002 when Sakae Sushi’s 18 chefs made Singapore’s longest California Maki sushi and $10,000 was raised for MILK Fund during Apex-Pal’s Management Challenge held in July 2006. Sakae Sushi and Nouvelle Events also hosted an educational tour for some 20 beneficiaries from MINDS.

1983 Sec 4 Squad Anglican High School

I was posted to Anglican High School NPCC Unit when I passed out as a Cadet Inspectors since 1982. It was a great time in 1983 for me to work with the sec 4 squad which had only 10 members, to run the whole NPCC unit then. See the pictures below and these 10 members are: Ah Poh, Gioh Leng, Kwee Yan, Lay Ching, Lay Khim, Lay See, Li Ling, Mei Lian, Mui Mui, and Puah Hoon
